Practice, I cannot stress the importance of practice, every learning guitar player should set out specific time to practice, know what they are going to practice in that time and just go for it. None of your favourite guitar players would be where they are today if they did not practice. I know this seems obvious, but it is something you do need to bare in mind whilst learning the guitar, or any other instrument.
Another bit of advice I am going to be giving you today is that the most common methods of practising are pretty much always the best methods for practising. For example, every day a guitar player will go onto a guitar forum and ask; 'how can I alternate pick as fast as Paul Gilbert', and every one will reply saying; 'play it slowly at first and then build it up gradually with a metronome'. After reading this a lot of guitarists will then think; 'But that will take ages' or 'I don't have a metronome', and then start scanning the internet for another method....... but the truth is that there really isn't a better or quicker way, and if they had spent all that time just practising the way they had been told, they would be a lot better at it by now.
So remember, practice practice practice!!
And there are plenty of great free metronomes on the internet if you can not afford to buy one.
